Cable Jointing Courses

Theory & Practical

THESE ARE NATIONAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION UNITS OF COMPENTENCY PROVIDER NUMBER 91031

UETTDRCJ 21A Lay ESI electrical cables.

This Competency Standard Unit covers the laying of cables for electrical purposes and includes the laying of ducts and/or conduit for such cables. It could include direct laying of cables in trenches, on racks, in troughs and/or in conduit or ducts. It also encompasses cable pulling methods, pulling tensions, minimum bending radii, reduction of frictional forces, use of supporting plant(e.g. dynamometers, rigging, winches), working on FRC. PVC, A/C ducted systems and the sealing of cables.

UETTDRCJ 26A

Install and maintain de-energised low voltage underground polymeric cables.

This Competency Standard Unit covers the installation and maintenance of de-energised low voltage underground polymeric cables and covers the jointing, terminating, repair and replacement of cables. It includes the isolation of systems and circuits, the procedure of issuing/accepting electrical access permits, the undertaking of pre-commissioning and/or re-commissioning tests and the updating of system data/maintenance records.

UETTDRCJ 27A

Install and maintain de-energised high voltage underground polymeric cables.

This Competency Standar unit covers the installation and maintenance of de-energised high voltage underground polymeric cables and covers the jointing, terminating, repair and replacement of cables. It includes the isolation of systems and circuits, the procedure of issuing/accepting electrical access permits, the undertaking of pre-commissioning and/or re-commissioning tests and the updating of system data/maintenance records.

Pre-requisites

* UEENEEG105A Extract: Those holding an ‘Unrestricted Electrician’s Licence’ or equivalent issued in an Australian State or Territory meet the requirements of this unit and its pre-requisitte requirements. A ‘licensed electrician’ applying for an ‘electrical contractors licence’ may be required to undertake this unit to demponstrate their currency with verification of compilance requirements. In this case they are doomed to have met the pre-requisites for this unit provided that they hold a current ‘electricians licence’ or its equivalent issued in an Australian State of Teritory and have recently been in permanent employement as a licensed electrician sufficent to evidence current knowledge of applicable standards and regulations.

Who needs the ASP 1C Cable Jointing course?

Essentially everybody who wants to work as a cable jointer in electrical distribution needs to achieve the qualifications included in this course. It’s important to note that qualified electricians are not automatically qualified to perform this type of work. However, if you are a licensed electrician or hold another role within the electrical services industry, you may be eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). See our section on RPL for more details.

The prerequisite units for ASP 1C Cable Jointing

To make things easy, we’ve listed the three major units that make up the ASP 1C Polymeric Cable Jointing certification. Underneath each one, you can find the prerequisite courses that you must complete first.

UETDRDU013 – Joint, terminate and maintain high-voltage underground polymeric
UEECD0007 – Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace.
UEECD0019 – Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components.
UEECD0044 – Solve problems in multiple path circuits.
UEECD0046 – Solve problems in single-path circuits.
UEECD0051 – Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications.
UEEEL0020 – Solve problem sin low-voltage AC circuits.
UEEEL0021 – Solve problems in magnetic and electromagnetic devices.
UETDREL001 – Apply environmental requirements.
UETDREL002 – Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus.

UETDRDU015 – Joint, terminate and maintain low-voltage underground polymeric
UEECD0007 – Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace.
UEECD0019 – Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components.
UEECD0044 – Solve problems in multiple path circuits.
UEECD0046 – Solve problems in single-path circuits.
UEECD0051 – Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications.
UEEEL0020 – Solve problem sin low-voltage AC circuits.
UEEEL0021 – Solve problems in magnetic and electromagnetic devices.
UETDREL001 – Apply environmental requirements.
UETDREL002 – Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus.

UETDRDU016 – Lay power cables
There are no prerequisites for this particular unit.

Training courses for new workers

Workers who are completely new to the electrical services distribution industry may be required to undertake more basic training before jumping into the ASP 1C Polymeric Cable Jointing course. Indeed, there are many prerequisite units that need to be completed. These units are listed above, so you can see exactly which ones you’ll need to undertake.

If you’ve worked in electrical services before but you haven’t performed any cable jointing duties, this is the course you need in order to take that next step. Once completed, you will have met the requirements to joint, terminate and maintain both low and high-voltage polymeric cables.

Recognition of prior learning

There are instances where licensed electricians may wish to take on a new role within the electrical supply industry. This has been taken into consideration, and we offer the ability for experienced electricians to show evidence they’ve already completed the applicable units of competency.

A person holding an unrestricted electricians licence or equivalent in any Australian state or territory is deemed to meet the requirements of this course and its prerequisites. However, a licensed electrician applying for an electrical contractor’s licence may need to complete these units. They are, however, deemed to meet most of the prerequisite entry requirements if they have been working as a licensed electrician.
